Mackay/Whitsunday Region shares in $700 million boost for regional roads

30 July, 2010

Mackay/Whitsunday Region is a winner from the State Government’s unprecedented $700 million road maintenance program for 2010/11.

Member for Whitsunday Jan Jarratt said the Mackay/Whitsunday Region would get a total of $34.8 million to improve the safety and standard of state-controlled roads.

“This means better conditions for local motorists and importantly jobs for local people,” she said.

“Throughout regional Queensland, this $700 million project will fund more than 11,000 jobs and stronger regional economies.

“We’ve got a massive 30,000 kilometres of State roads we’re managing and we intend to support rural and regional economies across the State through jobs and better roads,” she said.

“We’ve directed $300 million of flood repair works to regional Queensland, which is on top of the $400 million natural disaster repair program. About two thirds of our annual maintenance spend has been directed outside of the SEQ corner.

“The funds will go to repair roads damaged in severe weather in 2009 and 2010, including flooding,” Ms Jarratt said.

Key projects for Mackay/Whitsunday Region include:

• $6 million for State Road Reseal Program
• $3 million for State Road Asphalt Program
• $700,000 for State Road Pavement repair Program
• $2.2 million for Mackay Regional Council RMPC (OSCR component)
• $2.5 million for Isaac Regional Council RMPC (OSCR component)
• $1.8 million for Whitsunday Regional Council RMPC (OSCR component)
• $648,000 for RoadTek RMPC (OSCR component)
