Member for Whitsunday, Jan Jarratt today urged locals to Prepare.Act.Survive with the approach of another busy bushfire season.
Ms Jarratt said the Prepare.Act.Survive campaign about to be rolled out across the state would introduce a range of new concepts that had arisen from interim recommendations of the Victorian Bushfires Royal Commission.
“While our local community operates in a different environment to Victoria, the Bligh Government is proactively making improvements based on the Royal Commission’s interim findings,” Ms Jarratt said.
“The Prepare.Act.Survive campaign will include community education, a new Fire Danger Rating system and the introduction of standardised community warnings that advise of the critical factors of a bushfire.”
“There will be television and radio advertisements in the coming months to remind everyone to take the necessary precautions.”
“The media campaign will encourage all residents who live in or near bushland to prepare a Bushfire Survival Plan. This plan will help residents outline what needs to be done if you decide to leave an area before a bushfire threatens and what you need to do if you decide to stay in your home.”
“The Queensland Fire and Rescue Service has also produced a booklet which will provide information on the new Fire Danger Ratings, emergency warnings and the telephone warning system Emergency Alert.”
“There will be tips and checklists for preparing your home and family, considerations for what actions to take, stories of survival as well as handy information about contacting your local fire station.”
“Now is the time for everyone to start preparing their homes and family for the fire season ahead.”
“Sit down with your family and plan exactly what you would do if you decided to stay in your home during a bushfire as well as what you would take with you if you decided to leave. These are all simple actions which will help prepare your family and home ahead of the bushfire season.”
“I strongly encourage everyone to make sure your yard is kept tidy and clear any excessive vegetation which could become fuel for a fire.”
