LOCAL VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTERS RECOGNISED FOR YEARS OF SERVICE

21 June, 2010

Member for Whitsunday Jan Jarratt today recognised long serving local members of the Rural Fire Service (RFS) at a medal ceremony held at Proserpine Fire and Rescue Station.

Ms Jarratt said she was delighted to meet with local volunteer firefighters to hear first-hand the important work they do within the Proserpine area.

“It is an honour to acknowledge the long-serving rural fire service members from the Proserpine Brigade,” Ms Jarratt said.

“Our firefighters deserve public recognition for the important work they do, and for their unfaltering commitment to their community.”

“Today is our opportunity to recognise these courageous individuals who have served their communities with pride and dedication for decades.”

“These men and women continue to utilise their experience and knowledge to respond to a variety of emergencies to protect lives and property in the community.”

Ms Jarratt said rural fire service volunteers played an essential role in the community.

“Last year’s bushfire season was one of the most intense in Queensland’s history and thanks to the efforts of our volunteer firefighters, along with their urban and auxiliary counterparts, there was minimal damage to property and, importantly, no lives lost,” she said.

“A firefighter’s role is challenging, demanding physical strength as well as a sharp mind, a commitment to teamwork and an uncompromised dedication to safety.

“It is a job which carries significant risk, but also the potential for great reward.”

“I encourage anyone interested in helping out their community by volunteering as a rural firefighter to contact their nearest rural fire brigade or the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service.”
