DROP IN NEW PYJAMAS FOR A WORTHY CAUSE

28 May, 2010

Member for Mackay, Tim Mulherin and Member for Whitsunday, Jan Jarratt are encouraging local residents to purchase a pair of pyjamas for Queensland’s most vulnerable children.

“We’re urging the Mackay community to get behind the Pyjama Foundation’s pyjama drive which is part of a national charity drive to help more than 30,000 kids in care across Australia,” Mr Mulherin said.

“The Foundation needs PJ’s in all shapes, colours and sizes.  Your donation will brighten the lives of children in foster care.

Member for Whitsunday, Jan Jarratt said that when children enter a foster home they can arrive with little – or nothing – but the clothes they are wearing.

“No toothbrush, no teddy bear, no toys and no clothes.  Buying a new pair of pyjamas is such an everyday occurrence for so many of us, but for these children it can make a real difference,” Ms Jarratt said.

Child Safety Minister Phil Reeves said it’s a sad fact that around 7,500 children and young people in Queensland won’t get to spend the night at home because it’s not safe.

“The Bligh Government provides $128,000 to the foundation to help fund its programs, while Education Queensland contributed a further $100,000,” Minister Reeves said.

“It’s important the community get behind organisations like the Pyjama Foundation that are dedicated to improving the lives of kids in care.

People interested in donating summer or winter pyjamas to the foundation are asked to drop off a set of girl’s or boy’s pyjamas, sized between 0000 and adult, to the Mackay electorate office, First Floor, Mackay Day and Night Pharmacy Building in Sydney Street.

Alternatively, you can post them to The Pyjama Foundation, Level 1,7 Hudson Road, Albion, 4010.
