The site of a planned $4.4 million upgrade on the Whitsunday Way was given the seal of approval by Main Roads Minister Craig Wallace and Member for Whitsunday Jan Jarratt, following an inspection today.
Mr Wallace said work would start in the coming months on a major upgrade of the Proserpine–Shute Harbour Road and Tropic Road intersection.
“It’s the next step in the upgrading of the Whitsunday Way,” Mr Wallace said.
“I’ve got to take my hat off to Jan Jarratt. She has been a strong and vocal supporter for better roads right across the region.
“Jan has listened to the community and has taken their interests and needs on board. Full marks to Jan for her persistence,” he said.
Mr Wallace said a roundabout would also be built on the important route.
“The roundabout will improve traffic flow and boost safety for motorists coming in and out of Tropic Road,” Ms Jarratt said.
Ms Jarratt said other work to be carried out on the Whitsunday Way before the busy Christmas holiday period included an $80,000 lighting upgrade between Cannonvale and Jubilee Pocket.
“Main Roads will also carry out $1.2 million in safety improvements at the intersection of Rifle Range Road,” she said.
Mr Wallace said the projects are funded under the State Government’s Safer Roads Sooner program.
Ms Jarratt said the work was a win for motorists and a win for local road crews, by providing them with jobs and job security.
RoadTek is scheduled to start the road works in August, weather permitting.
“There are some fairly significant service relocations which need to be carried out before work starts.
“It is anticipated work will be completed by late November in time for Christmas and the busy tourist season.
