The Queensland Parliamentary Economic Development committee has initiated an inquiry into developing Queensland’s rural and regional communities through grey nomad tourism.
Grey nomads, an affectionate term for older travellers who take to a road travel lifestyle and frequent Australia’s rural and regional sights, are an important section of Queensland’s tourism market. Defined by their active and social lifestyles, these travellers tend to visit in off-peak periods and in rural and regional areas not always frequented by other tourists.
Committee member, Jan Jarratt, said that the inquiry was looking for community and industry input into grey nomad tourism, its effects on Queensland’s regions, and other related issues. “Regional tourism sustains many small towns throughout Queensland, and it is important that we find practical ways of supporting this industry”. Member for Whitsunday, Jan Jarratt believes that there is a wide array of issues that the committee can consider. “We would like to hear of any issues facing grey nomads and the Queensland businesses that cater for them. It is important that we can get a picture of what grey nomads require when they visit to Queensland and the best way to deliver it”.
An issues paper that provides information on the inquiry, the committee, and how to make a submission is available online at www.parliament.qld.gov.au/edc or you can contact committee staff on 1800 504 022. Submissions to the committee are due by 28 May 2010.
