Fixed speed camera inquiry considers excessive monitoring of Queensland’s roads10 March, 2010

The committee will look into the placement, effectiveness and efficiency of new and existing fixed speed camera technology to determine their effects on road safety. The all-party committee calls on interested groups, businesses and individuals for submissions on the issue of fixed speed cameras and their proper role in Queensland’s speed enforcement regime. Committee member, Jan Jarratt, has called for local community views on fixed speed cameras. “Community participation in the committee process is vital, and road safety is an issue that requires community consultation,” Ms Jarratt said. “Research has shown that speed cameras have a real effect in reducing road crashes, and we want to balance this research with community feedback.” Jan Jarratt hopes that we can reduce the number of speed camera infringements issued each year while creating safer roads in Queensland. An issues paper that provides information on the inquiry, the committee, and how to make a submission is available online at www.parliament.qld.gov.au/edc or you can contact committee staff on 1800 504 022. Submissions to the committee are due by 30 April 2010.
