LOCAL YOUTH URGED TO MAKE THEIR MARK IN POLITICS

Young people in the Whitsunday region are being urged to nominate for the 2010 Queensland Youth Parliament.

Member for Whitsunday Jan Jarratt is calling on young people passionate about making a difference to nominate for this year’s Youth Parliament.

“Youth Parliament is a great opportunity for young people to have their say on issues that matter to them,” Ms Jarratt said.

“It’s a great learning curve and who knows – Youth Parliament might inspire them to take up a career in politics where they can make a real difference to people’s lives.

The 2010 Queensland Youth program is open to Queenslanders aged 15-25 and will run from April to October, including a one-week parliamentary sitting in Brisbane during the September school and university holidays.

One person from each of Queensland’s 89 state electorates will be selected to represent the electorate they reside in.

“They’ll learn about parliamentary processes and the role of committees and they’ll be given an opportunity to develop youth bills and regional action plans.  They’ll be discussing and debating issues that impact on young people.

“I encourage local young people with an interest in politics to put their name forward to be in the running to represent the youth of the Whitsunday electorate in the 2010 Youth Parliament,” Ms Jarratt said.

Nominations are open now and will close on 26 February 2010.
