RESIDENTS URGED TO PREPARE FOR STORM SEASON

09 October, 2009

Whitsunday residents are being urged to prepare now for the coming storm and cyclone season.

Member for Whitsunday, Jan Jarratt said it was ironic that the start of the storm and cyclone season is upon us at a time when Queensland has fire bans in place over much of the state.

“The reality is these events can – and do – happen at the same time in Queensland, and this highlights the need to be prepared for natural disasters.

“The Whitsundays is not immune to storms and cyclones and this is the time to start taking measures to protect ourselves and our homes,” Ms Jarratt said.

“In fact, in the past year, more than two thirds of this State has seen disaster arrangements activated,” she said.

“The Bligh Government has committed more than $14 million in funding and resources this financial year to ensure the SES has all they need in times of disaster.

Ms Jarratt said NOW is the time to prepare for the storm season.

“People should be taking steps to ensure their house and family are storm and cyclone ready,” she said.

“People should be tidying their yards and making sure there is no loose garden furniture or dead branches lying around that could become a projectile during a storm.

“Trim your trees, remove overhanging branches and clear gutters and downpipes.”

Other tips for preparing family and property for severe weather include:
• Preparing an emergency kit (emergency phone numbers, portable radio, torch, spare batteries, first aid kit, strong plastic bags for clothing, valuables, and plastic sheets, timber strips, hammers and nails for temporary repairs);
• Checking boats are securely moored, or protected on land
• Checking home insurance is current and adequate (Include building debris clean up/disposal costs).
• Nominating an interstate family member or friend to be a point of contact in case you and your family become separated during a cyclone or other severe weather event.
• Finding out if your home is located in an area that could be prone to storm surge or flooding by contacting your local council.
• Identifying the strongest part of the house (usually the smallest room) and ensuring everyone knows where this is in case you need to seek shelter in your home.
• Ensuring at least one person in your household knows first aid.
