WHITSUNDAY IMAGES THAT MAKE UP THE BIG PICTURE QUEENSLAND ONLINE

26 October, 2009

Works by artists from the Whitsunday region features as part of a visual mosaic snapshot of quintessential Queensland images permanently on display at the RNA in Brisbane.

Member for Whitsunday, Jan Jarratt said the 40 square metre mosaic was made up of 135 tiles and celebrates the rich diversity of regions represented by almost 70 councils.

“The production of the massive mosaic made up of individual tiles was seen for the first time at Brisbane’s Ekka in August,” Ms Jarratt said.

“Each tile is just under a metre in height and the exhibit was a hit with communities around Queensland.

“This project engaged communities from almost 70 Councils, right through to hundreds of individuals and included art groups as well as schools.

“They were all working together towards a common goal, which was developing this magnificent mosaic.

“The artwork and stories from the Whitsunday region were absolutely stunning.

“We want to share them with everyone, especially everyone in the communities who worked so diligently to bring this project together,” Ms Jarratt said.

“Through visual art, Queenslanders have had their say on what they believe represents their past and their future in Queensland’s 150th birthday year.

“Artists’ statements are attached to each tile, giving the viewer insight into the many different creative viewpoints chosen to depict each area’s past and future.

“Presented visually from a myriad of regional perspectives, it makes for compelling viewing.

“All Queenslanders, in fact anyone who has access to the worldwide web can see the mosaic and individual tiles.”

The mosaic was curated by Sam Di Mauro and his team from Griffith University’s Queensland College of Art.

Concept design and individual mosaic tile shape (roughly in the shape of Queensland) was created by Queensland artist Elise Parups.
