New environmentally sustainable toilets, picnic and camping facilities have opened at Whitehaven Beach in time for the September school holidays.
Member for Whitsunday Jan Jarratt said about $800,000 had been spent on visitor facilities at the popular day-use area and camping sites in Whitsunday Islands National Park.
“After three month’s construction, we’ve replaced the existing toilets with new buildings housing nine pedestals to cope with the high number of visitors to the site,” Ms Jarratt said.
“The upgrades will improve waste removal, reduce visitor impacts and make sure our most popular visitor site can cope better at peak times.
“For picnickers, additional seating and serving areas provide the perfect spot for a picnic, and those staying a little longer can relax in camping nodes at the southern end of the beach.”
Ms Jarratt said the Qld Parks and Wildlife Service had already received plenty of interest in camping over the September school holidays and the new facilities would be welcome during the popular spring months.
“More than 20 camping areas on the Whitsunday national park islands offer a fantastic bush camping experience.
“With small secluded sites and larger social areas, there’s something for every camper in the Whitsundays.
“Keen campers can find out more and book their permits online at www.derm.qld.gov.au or in person at the Whitsunday Tourist Information Centre on the Bruce Highway in Proserpine.
“We encourage visitors to keep a look out for more improvements in the coming months with new visitor information and walking opportunities to open by the end of the year,” Ms Jarratt said
