A new name has been selected for a well-known bridge in the Whitsunday region as part of the state’s Q150 birthday celebrations.
Member for Whitsunday, Jan Jarratt said the bridge over the O’Connell River on the Bruce Highway just south of Proserpine, is to be known as the Sidney Cotton Bridge in acknowledgement of the former resident’s fame as an inventor and aviator.
The recommendation for the name was submitted to the Q150 bridge naming panel by the Proserpine Historical Society.
Sidney Cotton was a Proserpine-born pilot who made a significant contribution to aviation. He invented a flight suit called the Sidcot Suit, which was widely used in the aviation industry. He also developed new techniques for high-altitude, high-speed photography.
Leading up to World War Two, Mr Cotton conducted aerial surveillance for the French and British Governments. It is also thought that the James Bond Series may have been based on his exploits as Mr Cotton was a close friend to Mr Ian Flemming and in many ways, Sidney’s daring is reflected in the 007 persona.
“I’m proud we could honour Mr Cotton in such a wonderful and enduring way. His story is one that exemplifies the inventiveness and courage that Australian’s are renowned for all over the world. Now every time we cross the O’Connell River we can think about Sydney’s life and help to keep the flame of his memory alive,” Ms Jarratt said.
The Q150 bridge naming project highlights the important role that roads and bridges play in building the state’s prosperity and connecting Queenslanders.
