About Jan Jarratt
Parliamentary Service & Career
Jan Jarratt was elected to the Queensland Parliament as the Member for Whitsunday in 2001. Following the historic 2009 election in which Premier Anna Bligh became the first woman to be elected as a Queensland Premier, Jan was appointed Parliamentary Secretary for Employment and Economic Development and was a member of the Parliamentary Economic Development Committee.
Jan has been an active member of Parliament, assuming consecutive roles as Parliamentary Secretaries to the Ministers for: - Tourism, Regional Development and Industry; - State Development, Employment and Industrial Relations; - Women and; - Primary Industries and Fisheries.
On February 21, 2011, Jan was selected by Premier Anna Bligh to join the Cabinet as Minister for Tourism, Manufacturing and Small Business – a portfolio in which she has worked passionately and tirelessly.
Jan is a strong advocate for the development of business and industry, evident in her role as Chair of the Queensland Small Business Advisory Council which she took up in August 2009 and continues to champion.
Jan’s love of helping people reach their full potential began early in life. It led to her studying to become a primary school teacher, with her first posting was to Koumala State School on the Queensland central coast. Jan then relocated to Mackay and taught at Mackay West State School, before taking up a position as Learning Support Teacher at Walkerston State School.
Personal Life Born at Miles on October 22, 1958, Jan was raised on a wheat and cattle property at North Dulacca, east of Roma. She has two sisters and a brother with whom she attended a one-teacher primary school called Glenaubyn.
Jan received her secondary education at boarding school in Warwick where she was school captain.
Jan has two adult sons, Ben and Jeremy.
In 2007 Jan married Hilar (Ziggy) Ziegler, a professional photographer. They now reside in beautiful Cannonvale in the heart of the Whitsunday electorate.
Jan’s Interests include travel, reading for pleasure, diving, meeting new people and sailing.
